The real reason why this movie was so long

Is because it had 3 different story lines.

1. George a famous comedian/Actor is dying & want to set things straight

2. George a famous comedian tries to get back with his Ex while she still has a family

3. A young comedian gets an opportunity to learn from a huge comedic star while being his assistant

So as you see 3 movies could be made out of what Funny People did.

The new movie starts when he gets healthy & wants to get his ex.

Sitcoms can do three story lines in 22 minutes.. so I don't think its really a valid point. You can pretty much look at any movie regardless of the run time and separate out more than one 'story line'.

I could have done without the 45 boring minutes of George and Ira living with the Ex. Things didn't pick up until her hubby showed up.

Sitcoms are designed to have short stories. Movies are designed to tell a complete story. They casnt be compared unless its a made for tv movie.

It's 2 different movies to me. Story lines 1 and 3 are intertwined.

I think 1 couldve had his assistant be a smaller role honestly. 3 the assistant is the aspiring comic that needs a main role. Its his opportunity to make it with the help of a veteran.

it doesn't seem all that long to me. it's not Lawrence of Arabia for god's sake, and really the structure of the film is important. i mean the first act is like an hour an a half itself and if TWO HOURS and TWENTY SIX MINUTES is too much for someone's attention span then i . . don't even know, stick to sitcoms, but no more then five in a row.
