a female agent?

Who else thinks the new series would of been fresher if we followed a female agent around instead of another male protagonist. My pick would of been Gina Carano. She would of had more of a hard time go toe to toe with the male agents in the movie of course, which could of been interesting. (the fact that they are boosted would also explain how she can beat up normal cops, guards etc.

And have the scientist be played by a guy, to really switch the gender roles around. It's always funny to have a badass chick have to come to the rescue of an emasculated guy. I don't know, just a thought... something we hadn't seen before in these movies.

Just watch Haywire again.

reply

Can't say it would appeal to me. I prefer to watch the guys, although I also like "Castle" and that has a large, non-aggressive guy following the woman with the gun.

reply

No way.

Too unrealistic, especially given the increased focused on realism in Legacy what with all the lingo/genetic modification/behavioural programming/training footage.

No one in that crème de la crème level of black-bag operators is a female. There are no female SEALs, no female SADs, no female DEVGRUs, no female SAS, no female Spetznaz. They wouldn't make it. It's as simple as that.

Where women do make it in front-line MOSs they do so because the physical requirements have been halved for them.

Even in that scene where Aaron confronts the two operatives interrogating Marta at her house, even though they're both armed and working together; one of them ends up dead within 10 seconds and the female operative is left with a broken shoulder and is killed minutes later; from behind, totally unaware.

I couldn't picture a scenario in which a female operative could get the drop on Aaron (or any other male Treadstone/Outcome operative) and have any reasonable chances in a CQB, hand-to-hand fight.

There's already been how many clichéd films about no-nonsense, tomboy-ish female leads who kick butt and hang in with the guys; i.e. anything with Milla Jovovich in it.

That sh*t should be relegated to lesser action franchises.

The Bourne series needs to keep a bare minimum level of realism.

There was a female outcome agent in Legacy. She was in the scene that gave us the explanation for the yellow triangle pills. She later died on the subway

It may sound sexist to agree with Pierro, but he is right. I, for one, am sick of everything having to be equal. The Resident Evil movies are a prime example in showing that a manly woman gets annoying. Put a stronger/athletic woman agent against Bourne or Cross and she would be wiped instantly. I do like the realism that this movie offers. If they did do all the genetic enhancements and stuff they would have to look deeper into the psychology of a female as well. They'd have to try and eliminate the menstrual cycle or she'd have to disappear for that time period. To be honest the ONLY female action character I like is Trinity from the Matrix. She's still feminine AND kicks ass instead of butching up.

reply

Pretty ignorant. It's well known that women make better spies. A female agent would be great and would be realistic cause being genetically altered she'd have increased strength, which would enable her to probably to beat up a normal man at least.

reply

Fantastic. >30 million in investment and you end up with a female soldier roughly equivalent to a normal man. Lol.

reply

For my taste we had enough "badass chicks" in such roles by now. Especially since they usually cast model type women. IF they are going to have a female playing a role like a Treadstone agent, then cast a woman like "Vasquez" Jenette Goldstein. But instead we get Angelina Jolie (Salt) or Jessica Biel (Blade Trinity), women that look good but are actually way too skinny and fragile looking instead of buffed and ripped. They are eyecandy, sure, but this isn't Charlie's Angels, this is the Bourne franchise, it's means substance over style.

BTW, there was a female agent in this, she just happens to be poisoned with the yellow pill the same minute she was introduced. But even she was totally miscast, she looked like a shy secretary, not like multi million super weapon.

I'm guessing that's because she most likely would have been employed in an espionage or intelligence-gathering role, rather than "wet work" and black bag operations like Aaron Cross.

Remember the Army General talking to Eric in the cafe about a highly successful operative in Iran who set back their nuclear program? My guess is Outcome was no longer a purely assassination-driven program but focused on a wide variety of special operations and needed agents with diverse skill sets who could do much more than simply kill and kill well. Sabotage, kidnapping, surveillance for instance; these tasks could be handled by female agents and they might even be better in such roles because they'd be less expected.

Females do have their purpose in the intelligence/military community and even open up new possibilities in the world of spying given the fact that they use elements of trickery and roleplay that are not available to men; but certainly not in elite special forces units.

They're nothing but a liability for programs like Outcome and offer no incentive to recruit when there are hundreds of potential and easily recruitable able male candidates out there.

reply

I wasn't about to say she is a superkiller like Bourne. The movie made it clear that these active Outcome agents that are about to be killed are long-term spies.
However, spies are still professionals and highly skilled agents, they still need nerves of steel. But she looked so intimidated, shy, nervous, insecure. And she wasn't playing a role there because she was talking to another Outcome member (and probably superior).

There are plenty of good female action roles but you guys are right in that some of them only work as a work of fiction, not a plausible action role. Overall, most of the female action roles have been limited to the small screen and too many Hollywood movies feel the need to incorporate CGI-enhanced fight sequences or fakes like Kate Beckinsale and Milla Jovovich into the arena.

This franchise is fine with it's approach to having just agents of both genders unable to go up against the Treadstone experiments. A female Treadstone role would kill all credibility due to the current economy still being mainly against women in the military.

Gina Carano is a decent actress and a great fighter but she doesn't need to be in this ballpark especially now that she has a role in the braindead Fast and Furious saga.

reply

To be fair to the Underworld and Resident Evil films, I think it works there as it isn't aiming for realism in any way shape or form. The Bourne films are and thus whilst I can see good reason for it, the highest physical performers would be male and the films have focused on the best of the best. I wouldn't be against a more cerebral agent though who could certainly be female.

"she looked so intimidated, shy, nervous, insecure"

That was probably the point (her cover). Nobody would expect her to have the balls to be a spy.

Listen! Do you smell something?

reply

She was talking to a doc that was part of the Outcome project, so there was no need to play a role.

In general I agree with you but you're quite wrong about Jessica Biel. She got jacked for Blade Trinity.

reply

A little bit, yes, but it still looked ridiculous when she was kicking vampire ass.

reply

Agreed, I would rather see Kate Beckinsale...although she is still in that mold you mentioned of being skinny and can be manhandled. But, she does act in those action movies a lot better than Biel, so in certain instances she can get away with what she does. Plus, her action characters are mostly fictional.

reply

Personally, I've always thought that making a minor appearance as a female agent out to kill Bourne would have been a good debut for Gina Carano.

reply

Good point, with Gina, she should be the female version of Bourne definitely.

reply

I don't mind the idea of a female assassin, but it would be better to make her a stealth/weapons expert who does her work from a distance. The "girl power" kung fu crap never works for me if a movie is trying to be serious.

reply

if they did a film with a female lead, this would be come an ultra-unrealistic cartoon like Charlies Angles instead of another Bourne installment

You guys are sexist losers.

You realize that there have been documented cases of people falling out of the sky (after their plane blew up) and hitting the ground without dying? And that certain cancer patients experience a remission of the cancer without any treatment? And gunshots to the head without dying?
