The entire Snowden reveal just makes this movie seem silly in hindsight.

The entire movie is about government officials terrified about their program being headlined on CNN but when a real scandal comes about the US public is mostly "Meh" about it.

It really makes the fear the government has about reveal in Bourne seem silly since we've seen the consequences in the real world.

The reason for the 'meh' reaction is because the public's mind is being numbed by all that crap that's on network television. I point to "Dancing With The Stars," "The Biggest Loser," "Amazing Race," et al. People don't care their government is lying to them. They only care who gets voted off the island. They don't care Bush and Cheney are war criminals, just so long as they can have their un-reality TV fix.

Well, there's also the fact that the program Snowden exposed was a program about snooping...whereas what Bourne exposed was an assassination program.

The idea that the government is listening in on your phone conversations/reading your e-mail isn't anywhere near as terrifying as the idea that the government has the means and the authority to have you killed and cover-up the murder so perfectly that no one will ever suspect the true perpetrator.

reply

Also, and quite sadly, the stuff that Snowden and others have leaked out hasn't really been that surprising. If you've been paying attention you already knew the gov't was snooping around, maybe not to what extent but you should have already known it was taking place

Are you trying to say Jesus Christ can't hit a curveball?

reply

Yeah but we already know that American citizens are already getting killed overseas via drone and that is mostly yawned at by the American populous. An assassination program that was found out would have the same effect.

reply

What is so terrifying about that? We know that the CIA has its own Special Ops troops that likely executes kill missions. So? You don't see many people getting all that anxious about it. It would be odd if a government the size of the US didn't have a death squad.

People watching those shows are a minority, so the argument does not fly.

sounded perfectly on-point to me, and much more thought out than a blanket dismissal
