What the heck was Beans?

I only just saw this film today on TV, and spent the whole time wondering what the heck Beans is supposed to be. I'm assuming some kind of lizard, but what? Also, what is "Spoons"? He has rodent-like teeth but looks like some sort of mutant Yosemite Sam.

That Wiki also says that Balthazar is a mole, but his sons are prairie dogs. How the Hell does THAT happen?!
