The massive eye

Did I miss the explanation of that huge eye underground? Thought it was jake at first but was way too big to be him.

Maybe instead of Rattlesnake Jake it was Ourobouros, the world-snake.

*Amarillo* --Euripides? Eumenides!

reply

Snakes can't close their eyes, they don't have eyelids.

After watching the film, I think we're supposed to think it is a human.

There's no way it was human. The eye itself was at least as big as a human is tall. It would have to be from a creature the size of a dinosaur. I guess it was just supposed to be some unknown, forgotten prehistoric creature that was supposedly buried and sleeping down there.

It didin't seem like anything too important to the movie to me, just another fun movie reference.

I think it was supposed to be a reference to Godzilla ’98?

(Same thing happens to the Army guys in the subway)

Great movie!

For anyone who doesn’t like Rango, they should be Bush Whacked, Sod Busted, Ham Strung, Side Winded, Pistol Whipped, Cattle Prodded, Tarred & Feathered, Hung up high, Ridden Hard and put away wet.

(That’s just my ejucad’ed opinion, *spat ‘’`. ding!)

LIke 10 responses and no one knows what it is?

It's the eye from Lord of the Rings, the eye of Sauron, since them walking over that pathway looked the same as in 'The Fellowship of the Ring.'

reply

yes mate, the best analogy till now.

I believe that if you rent the 1998 version of Godzilla (with Matthew Broderick), you'll see that it's exactly like the scene in the subway (or was it sewer?). Except that instead of walking past the eye, the soldiers come to what they think is a dead end tunnel. When they turn away and start back the other way the eye opens and then moves upward as the monster heads for the surface...if I'm remembering correctly. Mr. Big has it right :)

reply

That was my first thought too.

I haven't watched the commentary for a while, but I recall Verbinski saying that he wanted to have a Miyazaki moment, and that the eye was not meant to be taken literally.

The eye was sort of a joke. If you notice the eye's color and shape it is similar to a frog or toad eye but that's not important. It's funny because the audience expects it to be something dangerous or important but everyone just walks past it like it's nothing.

reply

That's a cool explanation.
