Best animation to date?
I think Rango may contain the most detailed and realistic CGI i have seen to date. I can't think of another movie that even comes close ...

Yes, that's why I love this film. Watching it on a huge HD screen is quite an experience that other animated films simply cannot provide. They are too "cartoonish", while Rango comes off as much more cinematic.
ILM has really done a wonderful job. I hope they make more animated films in the future, especially now that Disney's their boss.
Have you seen "Turbo"? Admittedly, the notion of a story about a snail with an addiction to fast driving is not one that immediately excites, but the animation is awesome, and is the only animation I have seen yet that is comparable with that in Rango.
"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars..." Oscar Wilde
I agree... brilliant in many directions.
shareIsn't that the truth!
It was SO exceptional that I thought there was a clip around the beginning where I thought they added real film. That split second where the human driver's hand turns on the windshield wipers. I paused it to try and confirm it and I just couldn't believe how incredibly realistic that looked. My guess is it's animated, but I'm not 100% sure.
Look at that!

You should really watch the director's commentary. It's available on some DVDs. They have a "lead animator" on the commentary, as well as a few other ppl & they discuss alot of the technical aspects of the film. In fact, it is a bit boring, but it makes you appreciate the technical challenges they had & how hard they worked on the animation to get everything perfect. The movie is so realistic that it's easy to take that stuff for granted. I think the movie is brilliant... the story, the characters, the dialogue, the visual effects... it's amazing.
shareI agree, I was VERY impressed with the animation in Rango. If you like this film, check out the art book " "The ballad of Rango: the art and making of an outlaw film" by David S. Cohen and Gore verbinski It is Very entertaining.
shareI agree. I was blown away by the animation, it is an amazing piece of art. The texturing is mind-blowing, everything looked dirty and dusty. Beautiful!
It's spelled Raymond Luxury Yacht, but it's pronounced 'Throat-Warbler Mangrove'
Agreed, it was gorgeous.
It wasn't just the realism, which is mostly a technical issue, but the choices they made in composition, palette and character design. The truth is I deal with realism daily. It's called real life, kinda used to it. I'd prefer inspired abstraction or beautiful stylization to realism used poorly.
Gore Verbinsky is a master of choosing good panoramas and his talent was not reduced in the transition to animated feature. A lot of 3D animated movies try to capture the feel of classic animation and polish it up. Rango went a different route, "shooting" this like a real, beautiful modern western and weirding it up a bit.
Many of the characters were disgusting, and I mean that in the best way. I might not want to see this trend applied frequently but seeing it for the first time in Rango was unique and refreshing. This movie made very bold choices with its anthro-animal designs.
The technology was very strong, can't underestimate it, but the creative choices made that technology art.
There are some animated movies I'd say do look a little better: Coraline, Princess Mononoke, Ghost in the Shell, The Thief and the Cobbler (maybe) but in the CGI feature length category Rango is my top pick.
I agree. It's the best animation I've ever seen in a movie. Hats off to the makers!
Boom.
