I think Jackie feels bad/guilty for Grace, at least in the first couple seasons as she's dealing with her anxiety...Jackie was the one who pushed it aside and insisted it was just Grace "being a worrywart" essentially; when she was actually genuinely dealing with panic attacks. Beyond that, though; I think Jackie feels bad that she's such the absentee mom - so she tries to make up for all her years of working long hours by letting her kids know that she'll be around "a lot more" by the start of season 4. By this time though, Grace's parents have divorced, she's switched schools, been dealing with her anxiety/OCD; and we can see her starting to really distance herself from her parents, but her mom in particular. I didn't mind Grace in the first two seasons or so, but I find her pretty whiny, and perpetually concerned now...it's like the whole world revolves around her and her mental state whenever she's in the picture, and it gets irritating. But having said all that...despite Jackie's addictive personality and self-destructive tendencies, I think she really does want to be a good mother, deep down. Her heart is in the right place; she's just misguided.
Jackie is a sociopath who doesn't really give a damn about anyone except her older daughter, who is a spoiled, out of control monster. I don't like these people but their story is entertaining.
