I hate Jackie...

I'm at Season 3 Ep 9 and I'm really hoping at some point in the future Jackie does something to make me root for her, empathize with her, think she's not a terrible person at her core, etc. I loved Breakinh Bad, but despite all the despicable things Walt did at his core he really thinks he went down this path for his family (at least at first), but Jackie isn't doing anything for the people that care about her. She's barely around her kids, she lies to and cheats on her husband, she's never truly opened up to any of her friends or colleagues...I just don't understand why I should care about what happens to her still.

Does this change at some point, is there something worth waiting for, or am I just going to be hating her and hoping for it all to blow up in her face (even worse, to where she actually tries quitting the pills for real) the rest of the series?

To comment on Walter White, he didn't care about his family. He was all ego. If he cared so much about his family, he would have gotten a better job than a teacher/car wash attendant. He could have gotten a way better job, but his ego over what happened with his initial business partners wouldn't allow him to do it.

As far as Jackie, she helps people, but she is a horrible person. The addiction doesn't give you an excuse to treat everyone close to you like garbage like she does. If she truly cared about her kids and friends, she's make much better decisions despite her addiction. Many people have this addiction and they don't treat everyone in their lives like garbage.

I have zero empathy for her.

Shot in the dark here, but Nurse Jackie didn't remain on the air for seven seasons because fans of the show hated the central character, yet you're judgement isn't allowing you to get the bigger picture.

Obviously if you're towards the end of the third season you know what the show's about, so you choice is to continue to watch something you hate, which maybe is your addiction, or stop.

Jackie couldn't truly be involved in inter-personal relationships because her sole identity was Nurse. Being a Nurse pulled rank against everything in her life. Pain-killers were a close second with everything else being laps behind these front runners. Towards the end of the series, drug addiction was clearly over-taking her Nurse persona, and Jackie could not resolve losing that identity.

You are correct to do so. Jackie never once tries to save herself from her addiction and rebukes all attempts from her loved ones to do so on her behalf. The character Jackie Peyton is borderline sociopathic and a hopeless drug addict. Her final act is exactly what you might expect it to be.

It's possible to be disgusted by the person Jackie is, and still to find her story interesting and the show entertaining.
