I don't think an autopsy would be performed on someone who died with stage 4 lung cancer.

Somebody's gotta pay the person performing the autopsy. Insurance doesn't cover it. They're only done if there's serious suspicion about the persons death or, and I've encountered this, the family orders it.

My grandmother passed away in the hospital of pneumonia, and an autopsy wasn't even suggested. I think it's only performed if the cause . death is unknown, or foul play is a possibility
shareExactly. My father died at home from lung disease and there was no autopsy performed; even though his decline was sudden and unexpected. We rang Hospice and they came to help us prepare his body while we waited for the mortuary transport to come.
shareAutopsies are rare. It's a total TV thing. The only time this would be done is if there was a suspicious death and an unclear cause of death. She had cancer, no one was raising suspicion, it would not be done.
