On account of it being the best thing on television right now and all?
I like talking about it, reading about it, thinking about it...surely there's more stuff to talk about, you know?
Like say...Homelander...could you imagine anyone else playing that role? Doesn't that actor seem perfectly suited for it? OH, what about SPOILER FOR LAST EPISODE when he lasers the booing crowd in half? Just zaps them into a pile of mush while looking like it was an orgasmic event for him...goddang that had me right there. Was like, "Whelp here we go, Homelander is finally going apeshit".
Because you know that the only thing holding him back is his public image, right? Once he loses that, his love for that affection is going to turn into hate...he's going to be fricking furious. The guy has never felt unconditional love...the adoration of the people is all that he has and he knows it...he hates himself for it, for needing it. Once its taken away, he's going to unleash holy fucking vengeance on those he'll feel deserve the worst fate he can afford to offer them.
The guy is an apocalypse just waiting for the tipping point...once his numbers get low enough where there's nothing left to lose, it'll be worth the satisfaction of finally being able to release his rage on those that kept him enslaved for so long. He's going to fuck shit up bad and he won't just enjoy it, he's going to need it...its going to be a release for him.
I swear this show is like nothing I've ever seen...the world is real enough, the characters are well enough written that I'm way invested in seeing what happens. This is just as good as Breaking Bad IMO...its different, but just as good in its own genre-twisting way.
What about Sparkles? Have we really seen her do anything besides temporarily blind people? I hope they show a bit more of what she can do. That or her boobies...goddang she's beautiful.
And Carl Urban is a far cry from Bones here, isn't he? Also some great casting there...dude can act.
Agree. Just watched the latest episode and came straight here to see people’s thoughts. Some say this season is not as good as the first, but I think it’s still the same level and I HATE that we have to wait week by week now. Maybe that is why some are losing interest. If we saw all in one go, we might have a different perspective. I wanted to binge the hell out of this show. Why did Amazon Prime decide to do this?? For me the episodes are getting better and better. Homelander is my favourite character. Is that wrong? 🤣 The actor deserves an Emmy nomination, even a win for his acting. It really is mesmerising. I wanted that protest scene to be real, but I suppose it is a glimpse on what is to come and he has to keep the pretence a little longer. This was a fantastic episode overall and I can’t wait for the next one. “That’s his fuck toy by the way”. That line had me in stitches.
That's exactly my thoughts...watching each episode one by one, we're subjected to analysis of each one, whether or not it had too much filler, is this season worse than last etc.
Its also a different story...the timeline has moved on, the introduction to this messed up world and the uniqueness of it...its hard to compete with the first season regardless, I'd imagine.
Homelander has a presence, doesn't he? I think he's my favorite too...he's just fucking unhinged...he exudes menace, but it masks a crippling insecurity that serves to make him that much more on edge. Yeah he's an amazing character that owns every scene he's in...the guy can act the part, right??
Stormfront is my second favorite, I'd say...she's evil as hell, but also razor sharp, she's way intelligent and that adds to her creepiness. Also strangely charismatic...I can't help but enjoy her complexity...she's funny, almost charming.
Yep, I wanted that scene to be real too...it'd have thrown the series in a whole other direction and showed that they're not afraid to mix things up. That being said, its not like we really need confirmation on that, the show is mesmerizing as hell, but that'd have been above and beyond going there already.
I really like Homelander as a character. By which I mean, I hate him. He's such a great villain. I agree that this actor is perfect for the part.
I think the first season of any show is going to have the most novelty for the audience, because you don't know what the show is about, yet. Are the Seven good or bad? What is the deal with Elisabeth Shue's character? Is Billy Butcher just a meanie or is there a reason he's so grumpy all the time? By the end of the first season, the major game pieces are on the table, and you know what kind of show you are watching. By the end of the first season, I had worked out that every episode will have at least one extremely gory death. That is the show's version of "fun."
In general, I avoid shows with a lot of gore, so The Boys is not the kind of show I would generally watch. But I think it's actually a show with a good story theme so I'm willing to stick with it, for now. I like that they are skewering some of the superficial practices that seem to pass for Christianity in our culture (which many serious Christians recognise as pseudo-theology and disapprove for the same reasons as the show), so I'm willing to accompany them on that storytelling path for now. It's a bit strange to see Christianity addressed at all in a modern tv show, but I think that the way they are doing it fits with the moral questions in the show and with the theme of monetised "feel good" entertainment morality as an empty and corrupting imitation of true morality.
You think they're skewering Christianity? I haven't given it much thought really, but it seemed like Scientology to me for some reason. Maybe it was the whole way they went about getting the celebrity endorsement, but I'm glad they went there...I kinda enjoy seeing religion of any sort skewered a little. So much to explore there, you know?
Yep, my thoughts exactly on the first season, very well put.
OHH you're talking about capes for Christ, huh, not the Deep arc...
Yeah, they absolutely nailed it...I forgot all about that! Stargirl crucified the concept in that speech of hers, pardon the pun...that was some truth right there, I don't care what religion you are!
"An empty and corrupting imitation of true morality"...that's way poignant...and so very true. What a way to put it.
I am fairly religious so I don't necessarily appreciate it when religion is skewered, but it depends on how it's done. I tried The Real O'Neals which was supposed to make fun of Catholicism and I found it to be superficial. The main couple was getting divorced, and they both immediately started talking about dating new people, without seeming to notice that might be a problem for Catholics. The writers just completely failed to understand or make use of the thematic base from which all their conflict was supposedly generated. If you're going to offend an entire religion, at least offend them in an interesting way!
I liked Starlight's background with the Christian youth group thing (sorry, that is not a culture I grew up with so I don't know all the lingo). The vapidness of how youth are taught Christianity nowadays is actually something that bothers many serious Christians, so Starlight's concerns resonate with me! I'm curious to see where the series goes with it. If they can state something true about how moral rules should be constructed, then that will be really interesting. We'll see.
Another thing that was interesting was the Supers (including Starlight) who were told that their superpowers were a gift from God, and then found out that they came from Compound V. That was a terrific writerly reverse because it immediately forces each young person who has superpowers (Starlight, in short) to confront the question of whether anything about their faith is real, as well as question the assumption that superpowers are necessarily a sign of goodness, vs just another arbitrary genetic feature (enhanced by pharmaceuticals). So I think that goes to the thematic element in the show where Supes are shown as beautiful and good, and their images are carefully crafted to make them look beautiful all the time, because their whole business model depends on convincing the public that if something is beautiful and powerful and gets lots of likes on social media, then it must be good. And then the question is, how do you know what is good?
There is a lot in here to be examined and it's really timely.
What's there to discuss? It's pretty straightforward.
It's interesting to compare the show to the original but other than that - what you see is what you get.
Yeah good point, I guess. You can say that about virtually any series/movie...what you see is what you get. Because its true, right?
Wouldn't that be weird then, if they had like...discussion forums that existed solely for the purpose of discussing TV series/movies, where themes could be explored, concepts analyzed, characters studied, character motivations, plot contrivances, series progression, storyline predictions etc if only it was more than "what you see is what you get", dangit.
Sorry, but what a weird thing to say in a movie/series discussion board. "What's there to discuss?"
Take a look at any other thread, there's your answer.
I guess I'm a little disappointed. I mean, I like the story. But apart from the first 3 episodes the show completely disregards the spirit of the Boys.
I don't know what it is about TV series based on comic books/books that they don't just follow the story as its been laid out. I mean, if its popular enough for them to want to turn into a series, then its popular for a reason...people liked it, right?
So why not just do that story?
I wonder if it has to do with the egos involved...you got a bunch of people involved thinking they can make it better, wanting to stick their own little brand of creativity on it...
I don't know what that's about but it'd be interesting to understand I bet.
