Jackson endangered the Arc and therefore the future of humanity to save himself and his dog. A more believable ending would be for him to face military court followed by execution, rather than the warm welcome he received.

They were in a situation where 7 billion people just died in a day. I doubt anyone is up for killing yet another person for desperately saving their own ass.

The people watching said it was a suicide mission to go back to free the closing mechanism. He told his ex that they had caused the problem, so he needed to try to fix it, particularly because no one else was in a position to fix it.
