I'm surprised Almodovar didn't cast Penelope Cruz as the female lead !

I think he was sick of her. Just kidding.

Cruz would have been too tall to be Vicente. But he did dedicate the character to her though, calling Vera, Vera Cruz. ;)

However Elena Anaya is 5'5 whereas Penelope Cruz is 5'3 so Elena is clearly taller here

Penelope Cruz is much too womanly with bigger breasts and curves to pass as a you know what...

Elena Anaya is much much more beautiful. Cruz is not bad but compared to Anaya she is a duckface.

Actually, the fact of Penelope Cruz being more or less beautiful than Elena Anaya (which, needless to say, is just an opinion) has nothing to do here.

I'd say the key here is that Elena Anaya is more androgynous. As coolaree said, it is easier for her to pass as a former man. She's more believable in that role than Penelope could have been.

Apparently he originally intended to do so, but the production was held up for so long (years), that when the time came to start filming, she was unavailable.🐭
