Well, Add Day Shift To The List Of Reasons Why I Hated Prey
So, I watched Day Shift and highly enjoyed it. It's not going to win Oscars or anything, but it was fun. It was a mix of Blade and From Dusk Till Dawn. The movie did things a lot better than Prey though.
Main character (Jamie Foxx) was non-white, but he was more likable and stuff than Naru (and this is coming from a Native American). He was pretty much Blade.
Snoop Dogg was great. Too bad he didn't get to do more.
Not much wokeness/PC/SJW stuff except for one thing Jamie Foxx said early in the movie. He made a comment/joke about a possible black history month discount at the frozen yogurt place he and his daughter go to. But nothing else besides that. There is male vs. female stuff (especially male protagonist and female main villain), but it's more implied than being shoehorned in/in your face. And they don't do the whole men bad and women good stuff. There are male and female characters that are both good and bad. And everyone treats each other equally. They don't make it all about sex/gender.
The movie had a much faster pace to it than Prey.
Action scenes were great and a lot of fun. Even ridiculous/over the top, but in a good way.
CGI looked WAY better. Plus I think/heard they got contortionists for the action scenes where the vampires get all bent up and stuff when thrown around. So that's impressive instead of relying on CGI to do that stuff.
ALL female characters in the movie were better than Naru. Narrative/story arc wise. The main villain vampire had a much better motive to do stuff than Naru. I absolutely loved Jamie Foxx's neighbor Heather. Too bad we didn't get to see more of her. She had a better arc than Naru. Either they need to do a Day Shift 2 and have Heather return and give her a bigger part, or give her a spinoff. I'd watch a Heather spinoff. Jamie Foxx's daughter was likable and it was entertaining when she helped out in the car chase scene. Jamie Foxx's wife was a little iffy at first, but that's only because Jamie Foxx was keeping his job as a vampire hunter a secret from her. But once she finds out, then she becomes likable and stuff.
Also, Jamie Foxx did a much better job outsmarting the main villain vampire than Naru did outsmarting the predator. No "flower power" required either.
The only thing I didn't really care for in the movie or I found REALLY questionable was the humor. It was mostly poop and fart jokes aka bathroom humor. I like that kind of humor, but only to a certain point.
But yeah. I enjoyed Day Shift. Much better movie than Prey. Day Shift is how you do a non-white main character/protagonist and also female characters. If Netflix releases Day Shift on Blu-Ray, I'd buy it ASAP. Prey, I'd never watch again or buy.
