I just watched this movie tonight, and you're definitely right: this is not the Ashton Kutcher character we are used to seeing. But after completing the movie, I think that's a good thing.
Honestly, throughout the course of the movie, I had a hard time deciding what to think of his character. Early on, I couldn't stand him; then I fell into that old romantic/comedy trap of hoping that the couple would end up together; and yet the ending didn't bother me. Given his character throughout the entire movie, the ending actually seemed rather appropriate. And that's more thought than I usually have about an Ashton Kutcher character. Particularly in his romantic and/or comedy roles, I've come to expect him to be this clueless but loveable guy, for whom I want to see a happy ending (e.g., That '70's Show, A Lot Like Love, Guess Who), but in this movie, he just wasn't that guy.
Definitely a different role for him. Perhaps not quite so different as his more dramatic roles (e.g., The Butterfly Effect and The Guardian), but in some ways certainly different from what I think we've come to expect from him. I hope he continues to branch out in the future. Although I know a lot of people do not take him seriously as an actor, I think he does have some degree of talent,so I would enjoy seeing him continue to step outside of his typical character roles.
