What's up with the suspenders???
I just saw the trailer and he's wearing suspenders on 90% of his outfits... Is this the big thing in L.A. right now? Or are they trying to start a trend? It looked so ridiculous...

shareI totally agree! And I might add, what's with those jeans? No praise for the costume designer in that one!!
shareThe jeans themselves were fine, it's just weird that they were they only pair he ever wore! Anne Heche's character threw a pair of jeans she supposedly bought him, but we never get to see them.
shareyou rejects have clearly no sense of fashion at all.
shareI loved the suspenders.. buying a pair because of this movie.
Thought the costume designer was awesome.. this movie definitely had an effect on my wardrobe.
The suspenders got to be a little much. Fashion is fine and good but he wore the suspenders every waking moment and it looked even weirder when he wore them over sweaters. Suspenders are ok if you don't wear them as much as Larry King. He did.

JImmmmmmmmmmmmm, if you think the suspenders with practically every outfit he wore was fashion you're the one with no sense.
I thought the suspenders were an inside joke of symbolism...
1.) They are worn as ironic fashion because scarves and long sleeves, etc. are already clashing with the bikinis and tank tops all around him---then being 3/4 naked the rest of the time shows he leads a duplicitous life where fashion dictates he become the bait, and once he's established his catches, he is free to bare what little is left of his soul.
2.) The suspenders are up and tight until he lets his guard down around women or Heather in particular.
3.) He doesn't trust himself SO much that he puts on an extra layer of protection to keep his pants on, but gives in anyway...
4.) He is trying to SUSPEND reality by staying a Peter Pan of sorts of the promiscuous crowd.
5.) Like a dutch boy or amish farm lad, he is shown as vulnerable to the overwhelming systems in place in the vast spread around him.
6.) There are multiple lingering shots of his back with the suspenders crossing like an "X" as though he is a marked man, or if you take the time to look past his appetite for lust, "X" marks the spot where most of his heart-felt love scenes begin---with his back.
7.) People describe guys that are used for sex as "he's just a piece of meat." The suspenders could symbolize meat-packaging strings / bindings that are a metaphor for how he feels in reality.
8.) A "grocery boy" might very well wear suspenders or a uniform that would remind you of suspenders.

When I saw the film, I felt there was another reason: maybe they're used as a kind of symbol /memento of wherever small town in the middle of nowhere he was supposed to come from. Like it shows that, deep down, he's still a countryside boy who's trying to make it big in the big city. He just buys finer suspenders during his stay with Samantha because he can because she's paying for everything he wants.
shareI, too, was baffled by the fact that he wore them all the time - except when he was naked, of course. Wearing them with one outfit, for style, I get it, but with every single outfit in the entire movie? I also found them ridiculous!
