I would have been fine with Hans and a good-looking Angel too, but since there was such a difference it was sooooo hard to root for the good guy. Angel was so ugly. Alec was so hott!

Angel wasn't ugly I don't think, he was just unusual looking, it made a nice change to see someone believable. Hans is absolutely gorgeous and when I first watched it, I said the same, I wouldn't mind being in the woods with him. But, Alec was a 'horrible' character, I use horrible in the loosest term as I actually think he loved Tess, and Hans portrayed that perfectly. Jeesh, this man has barely aged from his Poldark and Mojo days!

shareThis is where I think the film wobbled a bit. We are supposed to hate Alec, but that's very difficult because the chemistry between Hans and Gemma was so strong. Much stronger than between Gemma and Eddie Redmayne. So it becomes kind of like a "huh?" moment for the viewer. Like, Tess why is it that you keep rejecting Alec? He's incredibly sexy. And Angel seems like a weak Ashley Wilkes-type in this film. Yikes.

I disagree. Sure, the man is a bit good looking, but the character he plays is too disgusting for me to ever find him hot in any way. I can't really understand people who do. Take David Tennant for example. He is one of the most gorgeous actors on this earth. His character in Secret Smile is a bit like Alec, only worse, cause nobody else expect her knows the truth about him. So when he "acts" all nice and genuine around other people it just makes me shiver.
Perhaps it is proof that they are both good actors..

I;m downloading the series now I haven't watched it, but the whole rape talk has gotten me extremely nervous, cause I hate seeing Hans as the bad guy! Anyway I'm really excited about watching it!! I love Hans!!
Don't worry, Redmayne isn't that much of a let down - it's just relative. The chemistry is strong enough when it needs to be. There are certainly three scenes between Angel and Tess which were plenty good enough to interrupt regular breathing. Watch out for the necklace . . .

I love the actor, have for many years, and think of him as a very good actor and quite good-looking, but I still saw how despicable he was. Looks have nothing to do with whether a man is good or bad. And sexual attraction should not blind a woman so much as to overlook the fact a man is a rapist.
Then again, there are so many women out there writing to real rapists and murderers in jail only because the men are handsome.
And women want to be taken seriously by men. (I am a woman, by the way)
