I agree with you on the horrendous-ness of this film. There's more of a plot in this film than in the "... Movie" franchise (discounting the Scary Movies, which are mostly alright). *But* the plot kind of makes the film worse, IMO. It would've been better if it was more of a loosely connected series of horror film parodies. But instead it's just a bad story with cheap knockoffs (super cheap, they couldn't have "realistically" puppetteered the Chucky rip-off?).
The presence of good comedic actors Leslie Nielsen, Kenan Thompson (kinda) and Steve Howey (always good for a nice laugh on Reba) doesn't do the film any favors. It just makes one sadder at the lost potential. Maybe Howey isn't the best for a lead role, but Nielsen is known to knock a supporting comedic role out of the park. The fact that the plot is so bogged down to make this impossible just makes the film worse than if they had three unknowns fill that role.
I don't think Nielsen is desperate for money. Seeing some of his late '90s offerings, I think he just likes hanging out at movie studios and accepting whatever silly role comes his way. The "in" thing now is to cast him in these parody films. Scary Movie 3 wasn't bad, and a good show of him as a supporting comedic character, but he hasn't done anything stellar since the Airplane and Naked Gun films. Stan Helsing is a new low. I now appreciate his work in Spy Hard thanks to this film. What I would *really* love to see, is another dramatic film role from Mr. Nielsen. Sadly, I don't think I ever will.
