Pile of computers/computer parts?

I saw the 96 minute version, so maybe this was explained in the longer one (or maybe I just missed a line of dialogue), but was there any explanation for the giant pile of computers and keyboards, mouses, etc? Such an odd visual. I assume they were taking them from around the abandoned apartments but why would the people who left leave their valuables?

I didn't get the feeling there were many honest tax paying citizens living in that building so maybe they were stolen?
