I was really letdown by this movie...

First of all, I actually thought this movie was gonna be a sequel for Cloverfield. Just associating the title with the word "Cloverfield", seems like a real trick on the filmmaker's part, as a way to get people's attention. Of course I was expecting Cloverfield 2. But the overall movie itself, just wasn't impressive...in my opinion. For some reason, I felt like I could predict everything that was gonna happen. The acting performances were pretty good. The movie itself was just boring and predictable. The ending was just awful. Maybe it's just me...but I just don't understand all the praise this movie has received.

Yeah, I just watched it...and I agree with you. I was disappointed.

I think that convincing someone to like a movie (or any piece of art) is kind of a fool's errand.

But as someone who liked it:

1) I personally thought that the performances were more than pretty good. It was basically a cast of three people and I found all of their characters believable, lived-in, and interesting. Goodman was the standout, of course, but I felt that the overall level of performance was very high.

2) The only thing that was predictable to me was the fact that the alien invasion was real. Aside from that, though, I really didn't know where it was all headed. I spent some time not sure if Emmett and Howard were working together.

3) Boring is obviously a subjective term, but I thought that the subplots (making the bio-hazard suit; figuring out the real deal with Howard's "daughter") were interesting and tense and well-paced through the running time.

I thought that the movie was a well-made, well-acted thriller and happily give it a B+/A-.

On the other hand, I watched the movie before it had been touted as being so amazing, so I went in with very middle-of-the-road expectations (alien flicks are not really my thing, so the Cloverfield tie-in was not a selling point for me). I can see how going into it expecting the best horror of the year or something would leave one feeling underwhelmed.

I agree. This film was a letdown. I liked the characters and acting but it fell pretty short. The ending was cheesy and the aliens seemed tacky.
