THIS FILM IS NOT GOOD....BUT IT IS MUCH BETTER THAN I HAVE BEEN GIVING IT CREDIT FOR....SOME SOLID ACTING AND A FEW NICE TOUCHES COUPLED WITH A GENUINELY CREEPY TONE.....NOT BAD.

It didn't stand a chance. Firstly for being a remake of such a highly regarded classic and secondly for it being the first time someone other than Robert Englund played Freddy Krueger. Regardless of who they chose they'd never be considered good enough.
Add that to the fact it just isn't as good as many other remakes from the time (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn of the Dead, The Hills Have Eyes, Black Christmas, Halloween, Friday the 13th to name just a few).
I thought this one was okay at the time, the score by Steve Jablonsky is brilliant. It's only bad compared to the original, but is it much worse than the sequels? Not in my opinion it isn't.
