I honestly found this Freddy to be scarier...
This film does not compare to the original at all, but it is certainly better than virtually any sequel save for The Dream Warriors.
And the new Freddy is much darker, crueler, and scarier than Robert... But I have a feeling I'll get crucified for saying that.
