He was a child molester. In fact they tried to drop hints through out every Nightmare on Elm street movie. "He was a *filthy* child killer"
They were all set to outright say that he was both a molester and killer then there was a huge child molestation case (Masterson??? I think that was the name) and they were terrified of outright calling him a molester. Think of Freddy's sarcastic lines etc, then imagine the teens finding out he was a molester WHILE there was this huge news story about a child molester??!!!! That has bad press written all over. Movie would have tanked.
Agreed. In fact we saw firsthand that this would have indeed been the case with the remake. If they had left it ambiguous like before, or gone with the Candyman-like origin (he was an innocent that was killed and now wants revenge), we'd be talking about the second or third sequel to the remake by now.
The only difference, IMO, is that either way people won't stand for a child molester supernatural killer, whether it mirrors something that just happened in the news or not. The want a villain they can "root" for, and no one is rooting for a child molester.
I've seen the original series a few times, and yeah except for New Nightmare hints though nothing explicit saying that Freddy is a child molester is sprinkled througout. But since its never said outright people's conscience is clear to root for Freddy.
