Why is Freddy able to appear to some of these people even though they're still awake? Doesn't this contradict the rules of the original?

REMAKES ARENT EXACT COPIES. its remastering the idea, going somewhere new with it. whats the point if remaking something if its exactly the same?

They explain this in the movie. After you stay awake for over 70 hours you start to have mirco naps where the brain shuts down functions for several seconds to recharge itself, which means you're dreaming but you don't know it. That's what the character of Quentin says to Nancy.
