I don't blame the actor as I think he's been great before in other projects. I think he was set up for failure by first the appearance that they went with by using both makeup and CGI. Next there was his backstory, which really ruined this Freddy for me. I agree that he is shorter than Robert Englund, but I didn't find that to be important. According to IMDb it's a 4 1/4" difference, which I feel is actually pretty substantial. I also agree that the voice was awkward, but I place that on the director as that is likely the direction he wanted to go with the character. The actor has range, and I am sure he could have done something completely different.
Also I thought that Derek Mears was great as Jason, but I can understand how the changes made in that film could be upsetting to fans of the franchise. Gone was the score for starters. Secondly it's a reboot of the series and covered far too much material, and never were we on a camp site. Instead it was a cabin in the woods type of movie. Others may complain that Jason is too tall now. Considering that it is a reboot I feel like it's acceptable that this Jason is simply taller. Some may complain that he's too fast. Before he was resurrected with the lightning in Part VI he was definitely slower, and it was not as obvious that he would move around as if he were teleporting after his victims. Now it's like a page was taken out of Zack Snyder's book on the Dawn of the Dead remake. That film had fast zombies, and now we have a fast Jason.
Anyway, there's plenty wrong.
