You saw who he shot, just deputies lied to him on who he was so the mafia would think the guy that the deputies mentioned was dead but he was in witness protection but of course killing innocent women which Sam Shepard couldn't bare.



Job application: "Do you identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender?"

In the book, he finds out, but it's treated as an afterthought. Maybe a scene near the end in which he decides that, with everything he's just been through, he'd just rather not know anymore might have worked. As for comparing this to the source material, both follow the same basic story, but have a few differences. The biggest one being that Richard actually tells his wife what's going on after he saves Ben and she reluctantly agrees to let the two work together to find out the truth. We also learn more about Ben's past.
