Loved it! But missed some poignant scenes from the book

SPOILER:

I really loved this film. It was exactly as good as I hoped it would be but I did miss some scenes from the book, and some developments I wished was in there:
In the book there is mention of Michael C. Hall's character losing his father via suicide, this leads him to having Sam Shepard's character as his surrogate father (many times it's referenced how he reminds him of his father). I wished this major theme, of him being the surrogate father was in there.
What do you guys think?

I did not read the book but I could see why they did not include it because to make the movie flow better.

I actually thought, during the movie, that both Jim Bob and Russel were acting kind of like fathers to Dane and that it helped him come to terms with what had happened and in the end made him go back to his family a better man. So without having read the book I think they managed to take from it what was important.
