There wasn't so many un answered questions, I thought this was going to become a corruption tale which would of been great but instead of explaining all the reasons for what the cops were doing. I would of loved this movie if it there were answers for what and why the cops were doing what they were doing. Why would they be trying to make it seem that Freddy is dead? And by the end you never get the real *beep* answer which is just stupid. Did I miss something or am I over thinking it?
Why would they be trying to make it seem that Freddy is dead?
There's an explanation in the drive-in scene: Freddy was a member of a mob gang, busted by the cops he decided to confess everything he knows about the gang and then was put under witness protection. The cops faked his death to guarantee him a new life and security.
I suppose because the cops were afraid he can discover the truth and tried to kill him. He was just released from jail after many years and initially was pretty determined to avenge his son, he was just an unwanted witness. Anyway i agree with you that some of the plot is a bit forced.
The film is a deadpan 'comedy' spitefully taking the mickey out of genre 'innocent hero' violent crime films of the era. However, it is purposely designed with the hope that 99%+ of all viewers won't notice the joke, so the director and writer can laugh at those too 'stupid' to understand what is shown to them.
The plot holes, and random crazy inclusions of classic 'themes' from such movies (like the 'snuff' video concept) is quite intentional.
However, I would ask whether Hollywood has the right to 'bite' the hand that feeds it. 'Elitist' Hollywood 'intellectuals' looking down their noses at those who enjoy this type of movie, and purposely presenting a film of utter nonsense to show how 'dumb' the audience actually is when it fails to get the 'joke'.
People who enjoy tacky violent crime dramas KNOW that such fare isn't 'high-art'- but so what? 'Cold in July' exists for a quite unpleasant reason, and many people should ask why Hollywood would finance a person with such an unpleasant attitude to those that pay the bills.
This isn't a Hollywood film, it's called an independent but I guess you don't know what that is because of your myopic brain. So people that enjoy a film are idiots even if they see the holes, oh well even with the holes it was okay and watchable.
