movie vs book

*** SPOILERS ***

Can someone who read the book, tell me if these 2 issues are explained in it?

1. Why did the framer guy, join the 2 other guys so willingly in their violence as the film ramped up

2. Was it ever explained who the framer dude really shot, at the start?

Im curious if these 2 things are in the book, thank you. I loved the movie, but these 2 things are playing on my mind.

1. In the book the story is all told from Dane's(framer guy) POV. So the reader gets a good sense of why he goes along with Russel and Jim Bob so willingly toward the end. It stems from just wanting to know the identity of who he killed and a misguided sense of responcibility that it all started with him and nearly destroyed his family. He also explaines that Russel reminds him of his own father. They bond more in the book than the movie and Dane wants to help him find his own son. But it all goes south.

2. Nope. It's never explained who he was. It's left unresolved but you get a better idea that that is not what the story was ever really about.
