Can anyone clarify why the police were trying to kill Ben (Sam Shepard)? My apologies in advance if this has been addressed elsewhere. Maybe I just missed something in the film.

My understanding is because he was threatening to upset the apple cart hy pursuing revenge against Dane. They wanted the whole thing to die away because they didn't want it to come out that the dead man wasn't who he was supposed to be as that would expose the fact that they were on the take from the Dixie Mafia. The same reason that they were stonewalling Dane when he realised that the dead burglar was not who they claimed he was.

Whaaat? I don't think the local police were in cahoots with the Dixie Mafia. The police/FBI's goal was to take the mafia down by using Freddy's testimonial as a witness. So they got the mafia to stop trying to track down and kill Freddy for turning rat by faking Freddy's death and claiming that he was the person killed in the home invasion.
