Compare Cold In July with No Country For Old Men

Can't wait for Cold In July to come out in theaters. Here is a site which compares it to No Country For Old Men:

What do you think?

I got a little bit of a NCFOM vibe from the trailer. I love gritty, rural thrillers (I'm working on a script for one myself), so I love NCFOM and can't wait to see Cold in July.

That said, those are some stupid comparisons.

"Cold in July" is way better. Not the equal of the Coens' classic, "Fargo," but perhaps up there with the great "Blood Simple." As a Coens fan, "No Country for Old Men" was a big disappointment to me.

As a fan of the Coen Bros and the great Cormac McCarthy, No Country For Old Men was a great achievement. One of the best films of the Coen's career(s), and one of the most perfect adaptations of a novel I've ever seen.

I have not yet seen Cold in July but I'm looking forward to it. Oddly I can't find it playing near me in New York. As it stands I'd have to go to Long Island to see it.

lol cold in july is retarded in every way of the plot and script...Coens movies have never even been close to having a plot hole or a retarded script...you cleary doesnt know what movie making is about if you think this crapfest is better than any of the Coens movies...I guess you love spy kids 3D as well...

Cold in July is a fun, occasionally suspenseful neo-noir thriller. It has a layer of irony over everything with its slightly over the top retro vibe, especially the ultra 80's synthesizer soundtrack. That makes for some good chuckles but tends to break the tension and suspension of disbelief. Nonetheless, its generally well made and exciting.

It is not even in the same class as No Country for Old Men, which is a brilliantly crafted film, and one of the best crime dramas I've ever seen.

reply

Yes. You are right about the layers in this film. Just wondering....have you seen One False Move, directed by Carl Franklin? It was written by Billy Bob Thornton and is as dark and ironic as this film is. One of my favorites, along with The Last Seduction and Red Rock West.

I agree with you about No Country for Old Men. Spurred me to read all of Cormac's works.

reply

Yeah, what lem said.

This was a decent movie, and I will be recommending it to friends, but comparing it to No Country for Old Men, a genuine classic (arguably), is a bit ridiculous.

reply

I would not even bother comparing the two films!

Its that man again!!
