Mary Ellen?
How do you think they will do Mary Ellen? Will they make her as abnoxious as she sounded in the book? Who could you see playing her?

shareThis is such a great character. It's going to require someone with some acting chops (NOT MERYL STREEP). Rosy O'Donnell is obnoxious enough. This is a tough one, maybe they will go with an unknown or a good character actress.

Oh, that's so funny! Just thinking of her in that role makes me laugh! She could fill Mary Ellen's shoes and perhaps give an right edge to the role. Since she doesn't like long jobs this would be something of a glamorous cameo! I don't know how audiences would respond...you could be on to something.
You're right, her or another character actor who can really sink her teeth into the role and have fun with it, someone who doesn't care too much what people think.
When reading the book I had a clear picture in my head of Mary Ellen. Jillian Armenante who played Donna on Judging Amy immedietly jumped into my mind and refused to leave. The image is so strong I'm going to have a hard time picturing anyone else!
shareMelissa McCarthy would be great if you ask me.
shareTrue that, Melissa McCarthy or Tilda Swinton. Susan Sarandon anyone?

I think is going to be Kristen Schaal. She is hilarious and will be funny seeing her making the "pinching of the nose"

Has anyone read the book, Mary Ellen is chunky "granola wannabe" nerd, in her 20's. If Kristen Schaal playing Mary Ellen, they nailed the casting. Except for the fact that Bill and Katz will be in their 70's rather than they 40's so the dynamics with those three characters that was so funny in the book will be a little creepy.

Kristen Schaal would be great casting, Redford & Nolte (now confirmed) not so much.

The war is not meant to be won... it is meant to be continuous.
I kinda warmed to Mary Ellen. I found her as annoying, dim-witted and opinionated as the next, but there was also a sweet, whimsical quality to her.
I feel that Rosie O'Donnell would bring too much grumpiness to the part.
I'm imagining someone more along the lines of Allison Tolman.
