Yes, Mr. Newman would have been excellent! I heard that this would have their 'reunion' film.
Sadly, he passed away. Indeed, Newman is one of the greatest American actors next to Orson Welles, Marlon Brando & Paul Muni.
I must say that I miss him, but I know he's resting in peace...or probably trying to con God, Jeaus & all rhe Saints! ;)
Yes I miss him too. He was one of these good old decent and interesting movie stars.
I always thought An Unfinished Life could have been with Paul Newman in the Morgan Freeman role (MF was as always excellent though). There were the two grumpy old freinds bitching on each other you know, realy fun...

Newman was slated to star but he got ill and production for this film got delayed with several director's attached.

In '04 so lucky, went to a charity gala in Ct where Newman/Redford did a short play PN wrote; where they keep missing their time to do a reunion flick. PN says I'm getting too tired to act & even lies in a casket on stage popping up & winking while RR speaks!! Dark humor till the end. Afterwards at dinner Paul posed for photos & looked very healthy and still gorgeous. Redford too! :)
