Didn't look fit enough to walk up a set of stairs so how he managed a long trek is beyond me. No chemistry between two great actors. I'm not sure how good nick noltes health was but I found him hard to understand and he looked on deaths door. Yes I know he's a recovering drunk but he really looked I'll.
Don't agree, I think they had great chemistry. Nolte was a bit over the top age and health wise, but I guess that was the point, plus it made Redford look good!

I liked Nolte's character. The two characters played well off each other. If it had been another Redford type the two would have discussed articles from the Sierra Club magazine the entire movie.
Nolte's character did not look like he could climb a flight of stairs. But you never know, He looked like a hard scrabble, one step from being homeless kinda guy. Those guys can be pretty tough.
I thought the fact that they were traveling buddies in their youth but had been apart for years and years living completely different lives - gave them the exact 'lack of chemistry' they portrayed.
I loved all the little tidbits we got as they mentioned places they'd been . . .
Nolte was adorable. He has the funniest lines in the movie.
As for his fitness - sometimes an old guy'll suprise ya! If they wanna do somethin' they'll do it or die tryin' - this is some of the best acting Nolte's done in a while!
I kept waitin' for predictable plots - one of them dying on the trail, the obnoxious girl showing back up, etc, etc - but it just turned out to be funny and the post cards at the end were so cute.
