Why actors so old?

When watching the movie, I was irritated why all the actors are so old? I thought Hollywood finally agreed that college seniors don't pass anymore as Highschool kids.
And this movie does not try at all. Casting Auli'i Cravalho (23), Reneé Rapp (23) and Jaquel Spivey (25) I could somewhat understand, they are all established Broadway actors. Casting here some pros might be acceptable, even when even Mr Magoo couldnt be fooled by them. But why Angourie Rice (22), while nearly everyone knows her at least by her "Spider-Man fame" (7 years ago!), but she sings at least OK. But why casting then even smaller roles with way too old actors? Christopher Briney (25) is not even singing (at least nothing remarkable)?

They're all still younger than Rach McAdams was in the original

1. She looked definitely younger as her 26.
2. It's basically late 90s, when it was normal to have actors in that age doing high school movies, but that massively changed since the late 2000s.

I agree. I'm watching the movie now on Paramount+ and I couldn't help but notice that most of the cast looks too old for their roles. I think they should have cast actual teens to play high school students.

Stockard Channing was thirty-three when she played a high school girl in "Grease", but she was excellent in the role. You have to suspend your disbelief and enter into the spirit of the thing, and it doesn't matter. It would be difficult, if even possible, to find a lot of seventeen-year-olds who could sing and act as well as these older actors.

Maybe thats why I often hate musicals. One of my all time hate movies is still Chicago.
