He was obviously mean to the dog and hurting it. Hopefully he shot it and killed it quickly so that he couldn't hurt it anymore. People can leave violent situation, pets mostly can't.

I'm amazed at how you came to the conclusion that by my response I didn't care about the dog. How does that even tell you that I own and abuse pets? I worked in the domestic violence field. So many women won't leave their abusers because they can't bring their animals with them to the shelters. The animals get caught up in the cycle of violence too. I'm so glad shelters are trying to address this issue. Abusers who kill animals eventually kill their spouses/partners. It's too bad they never nailed this guy. It's very obvious he killed her and the other two people as well.
