I felt it was that you don't need a big job and loads of *beep* (eg. fast cars, big house) to be happy. All you need is a loving, supportive family and enough to get by. I first noticed this in the scene at Kevin Costner's character's house - he was happy, playing with his children, laughing, surrounded by friends. Ben Affleck's character wasn't genuinely happy, didn't spend time with his children...Know what I mean?
It seems like this film has many different interpretations to different people!
--- People don't throw things at me any more. Maybe because I carry a bow around.

cool.. indeed i feel that was a central theme as well... and it is a good message...
I could not sympathize or relate to the Affleck character... since i felt he was more of the cause of his own misfortune than any other force in his life... for example it is hard for me to feel his pain when he has to give up a Porsche... hehe... and i think the movie would have played better for me if i could have related more to his problems and gone on the journey with him...
but his TRANSITION to becoming more humble and appreciative of having a job did help deliver the message you describe... and in that sense, the movie succeeded...
- It has been said, that to write, is to live forever.... the man who wrote that... is dead! -
No one like Ben's char at first but they might later. He was the youngest of the three focused character and had family all around. The two old guys didn't. But there are many who are like Ben's but don't have any family or friends support. There are many messages in this movie.
