'My daughter's tuition at Brown is due' [spoilers]

Boo freakin hoo. Have her take out a college loan like thousands of other students have to.

I was angry that he was so distressed about that and then killed himself a few scenes later, as if it was the worst thing in the world that he couldn't just straight up pay for her entire tuition at Brown.

It's offensive to everyone that unfortunately doesn't have the luxury to avoid student loan debt and large interest costs.

I had a hard time empathizing with some of the characters in this movie.

I agree with this and also would add that this is a bit of bad script writing as well. His actions just don't make much sense. I think he also says that he wrote the check but then couldn't pay the mortgage. I think this character was to show that he didn't want to let go of his lifestyle or the promises he made to his children. If so, the director went about this the wrong way...

He wasn't living that extravagant of a "lifestyle" but had a nag wife who was ashamed of him for losing his job and a princess daughter who got everything she wanted from her daddy. He didn't kill himself over money and things, but lost himself as a man...he despaired and believed he was a complete failure. What was it that Old Man Potter tells George Bailey in It's a Wonderful Life? "You're worth more dead than alive."
