Personally I liked it. I'm a sucker for those long, panned shots. I find it visually stunning, though I think my wife doesn't seeing that I caught her yawning in said shots.
I felt the 3rd Act was relating his doom; the governor neglecting his art sealed his eternal incarceration with the final masterpiece representing his descent into his maddening destiny. If you think about it there's no real good way to end the story. It's about a guy who's in prison & stays in prison (he's still there today), regardless of all the crazy stuff that occurred it's kind of a boring story in the long run if you think about it. I think the writers/producers/director, i.e., forces that be, were trying to make it deeper & give depth & meaning to all the madness that he represents in order to give something legitimately significant for the audience. Yeah I'm sure I'm probably over analyzing (and probably incorrectly) it but whatevs, I loved this film
