Lack of focal depth ruins visuals?
Hi - one thing WETA haven't seemed to master yet is focal depth (ie: the depth of field in a frame where the focus is either on things in the foreground or in the background; used to create depth perception).
The Hobbit has visuals that look out of place. This is because your brain is trying to perceive depth of field - some things being further away from the viewer than others - but when all characters and objects in the frame are in focus your brain perceives them as being all the same distance away. In close-up scenes this isn't so apparent, however when in a tavern or outside, the lack of any depth of field really lets down the overall quality of the character animations.
I hope I've explained this plainly enough for most people to understand - and I'm curious to see if anyone else found the lack of depth distracting?
