Why doesn't smaugs fire melt the gold?

I am surprised that Smaugs fire doesn't melt the gold.I just looked up gold in Wikipedia and the melting point is 1947 degrees.I guess that Smaug know that his fire won't melt his treasure horde.Even if he knew that his fire could melt gold he wouldn't use it because he values his hoard and doesn't want it destroyed by his own fire.

Because it's a weak point in the film, in my opinion.

Smaug's fire would melt the gold. This becomes a plot-point when the Dwarves trick him into lighting the forges.

It was mentioned in the novels that it was possible for a dragon's fire to melt and consume a magic ring with the exception of The One; that ring could only be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom. I'm sure Smaug could have melted his gold if he wanted to, but he needed the pile of loose coins to serve as a comfortable bed to lay on as he slept.
