Warner's ruining horror spree.

There was a time I used to look forward to a Warner Bros Horror film. Those days are over. I should have known after One Missed Call that their spree of messing up horror had begun. The best I can hope for is generally from Dreamworks, Lionsgate or IFC.

After watching The Apparition disaster I decided to see The Rite thinking you can't go wrong with Anthony Hopkins. I was wrong. The movie looks great and was shot well, the director and performances were great, but the script was lacking in innovation. We don't need to see this story told this way again (especially from Warner's). I rated this 4 stars, all of them for Anthony Hopkins but then again, he could turn an order off the McDonald's dollar menu in to an Oscar winning performance!

Wasted
I just think the location and actors were wasted. The journalist was not used to her full potential. The school Michael was in. And Father Lucas' exorcisms. I like that they kept the vfx to a minimum, but they could have built more in to the characters.

Please Warner, there are plenty of writers with original, innovative ideas, please take the time to option material that will please the audience. Robert Shaye, please remember your roots, y'all were fine before you got involved with WB. now look at you. I love horror films and I've seen far too many indie films with great concepts that suffer because of low budgets, and then I see something like those multi-million dollar circle jerks The Apparition or One Missed Call and it makes me sick.

And in the immortal words of Julianne Moore: "Shame on you, shame on both of you."

The Rite really isn't a horror movie though. It's more of a coming of age drama with a couple scary moments in between.

It is marketed as a Horror film and is co-produced by a company that was founded with the release of A Nightmare On Elm Street. The Rite may have dramatic moments but at it's core is a horror film. A film that I would accept as a Drama with scary moments in it is The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Funny, that's how I've always felt about The Exorcist; a dark psychological drama with heavy religious overtones.

Love your Moore quote from Magnolia! One of the favorite and best performances by an actress ever! Other than that, I don't much agree with your post. It's not a horror movie and once you realize that it's actually very good.

I agree with pretty much everything you said, OP. Studios like WB unfortunately seem to "search" for a horror script with just the right type of angle that is easy to make, easy to advertise, and easy to sell. The Apparition, The Rite and One Missed Call were just uninspired versions of other movies that have sold well. No creativity, no thought to them, and all of them, regardless of their quality (varying levels of bad), are frankly boring and tedious to watch
