I remember seeing the trailer for this a few years ago and it looked awful, and I wondered why Hopkins would agree to star in a supernatural horror like this. But he's like Brad Pitt, in that people tend to always trust that whatever they star in must be alright. So do you recommend I see this or no?

It is not a bad movie. It's not great, either. But Anothy Hopkins gets to act the hell out of every scene he's in (well, at least till the CGI takes over), and that alone makes it worth watching. Rent it for a rainy day.
This movie is worth it if only for watching and listening to Anthony Hopkins go on the most awesome freakazoid rant on the face of the planet as The Devil:
"Please Mr. Preacher man please Mr. Priest! Pray for God to help me. Me, I'm just a poor little Welshman. All dressed up for the carnival, Mommy!"
