A good chunk of those votes could be farmbots.
Or not even that, that could simply be just a number IMDB made up, depending on "marketing cost" being paid to them.

If they were making up that number, that could leak and create a big scandal. A better strategy is to look the other way when Hollywood floods the page with farmbots, while deleting reviews and banning real users that give a low score to movies with a clear agenda. It's much safer: even if data leaked, what would be the accusation? Website moderation being badly done?
I am not certain either way. I remember negative reviews being completely deleted for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in the opening week, only 9/10 and 10/10 remained, that was pretty brazen and nothing happened.
I had 2 negative reviews declined, which I was pretty certain did not contain any offensive language. That is why I deleted my IMDB account, which I had for more than 10 years.
And still I am hearing people say, no, that could not have happened, because they value their brand.
Definitely not doing as well as the recent Marvel movies, at least as far as domestic box office is concerned. But the international box office appears to be quite decent, more than making up for the domestic shortfall.

After a record-breaking start, October’s box office closed out quietly this weekend with “Dune” repeating at number one and two prominent genre newcomers, “ Last Night in Soho ” and “Antlers,” stumbling.
Dune will stay in the lead till Ghostbusters comes out.
I don't really think Ghostbuster movies, at least the new ones, are in the same league.
shareReleasing Dune simultaneously on streaming was a mistake. There is an audience out there that are going to theaters, maybe not as a large as in the past but certainly enough that this film could have pick up more money over its run.
The Numbers pretty much had all the top 10 underperforming projections, with the exception of Ron's Gone Wrong. Dune did come in at 93% of its projection which isnt too far off.
OTOH, they have to make HBOMAX worth paying for. It is a dual-edged sword.
I suppose that's true. But they could of held the first home viewing options or an exclusive viewing window on their streaming service later and still got most of the benefits of having it on HBO Max. I am not sure getting Dune a bit early will be enough of a subscription driver to offset what it likely cannibalized from its theatrical run.
