Staged? (Spoilers)

I might be wrong but some of the incidents seemed a bit contrived to me - the argument with the promoter in Munich and the argument between Lips and Rob during the recording of the album, for instance. Or maybe they were just playing up to the camera a bit. Anyway it's a great film and I wish the guys all the luck in the world.

Doubt it. There was Im sure a ton of footage taken..the director might have choose to use that as it happened.
These guys are not actors...no chance in hell.

I agree about the argument with the promoter - I've just seen the first twenty minutes and came on here to see if anyone else thought it was fake. I don't think it was TOTALLY staged, but it definitely wasn't a genuine row - the guy in the glasses even seems to turn away, as though to laugh, when Lips is shouting at him. I'd say it was a contrived, playing to the camera incident, with the promoter/staff briefed beforehand that they were going to ham it up a bit.

reply

didnt think it was staged at the time, but something that lips said stuck with me as being odd.

when they come back off the tour lips said, and this isnt an exact quote, that they didnt get paid at all for the 5 weeks. im pretty sure thats what he says, or at least re-words it, but the jist is that they did the tour for no money.

if this is the case, why did he go ballistic at the one guy who didnt pay him?

perhaps that was the only gig they were meant to be payed at and got screwed, but it seemed weird that they would get paid there compared to, say, the festivals.

he said they got paid nothing....I'm pretty sure he meant next to nothing.....another words...they did get paid but not enough to make money

For years he has said this.......these European tours are an unpaid vacation for him.....they usually break even

reply

Let's not forget how expensive being on the road in Europe with no manager can be. I'm sure any money they made from shows were spent on gas, food, etc. They probably broke even at best. I've fought with scumbag promoters to get paid after shows....it didn't seemed staged to me at all.

reply

In an interview they mention that they broke even on that European tour. I assume that means all incidentals, like airfare and food. True to form, he doesn't seem unhappy about it, understanding that they got to travel around Europe doing what they love.

reply

I think he said they "made no money". This doesn't mean they didn't get paid, it means that, after everything, there was no money made. They essentially broke even.

reply

Yeah I noticed that about the promoter, it looked kinda staged. Its hilarious how un-intimidating Lipps is in that scene.

reply

The whole movie was staged

Exactly Chimar, the CD came out in 07, the concert was in 06 and Rob Reiner would have been directing "The Bucket List" in 06 so how could he have been on tour? So there is no way I can possibly accept this film. I have uncovered the great conspiracy about this film. I'll bet Lips isn't even balding. We must all rise up and speak out against this outrage!

I Gotta Lighten up!!! Forgot that Rob Robb couldent be in 2 places at once!!!!!! Thanks for pointing that out, And Ron Popeil still has lots of stock left over in a warehouse somewhere.

and you know this how?

Sacha is this you?

This felt more like a reality show than a documentary. And I believe it just as much as the reality shows. I've just watched this whole film, and I still don't know whether I like the band because the film focuses more on the conflicts than the music. I also wish the guys all the luck in the world, and I plan to check out their music. It seems bizarre that this film doesn't convey that better.

reply

It was a movie. Get over it.

reply

Robb Reiner and Rob Reiner causing a little confusion?

reply

It was certainly manipulative in terms of chronology. Dishonest as a documentary, certainly.
