Why didn't they manage to 'make it'?
It's been a while since I saw this movie but was there an explanation about why Anvil just didn't quite hit the big time?

they didn't make it cos they're awful. they were awful then and they're awful now. they just didn't have any impressive musicians at all, which was often the benchmark for bands of that style and era.
but. their film is really fantastic. great guys.great story.very amusing. very honest. i'm glad they finally got to play such a great show in japan. they deserved it for persistence and sheer love of making a loud noise
also, there were too many really good bands around to compete with...and most of those sound awful today. it wasn't a good era for lyrics. 80s bands don't stand the test of time since their song subjects were vapid, shallow and predictable.
i used to love dokken back then but today, apart from the guitar playing, they are unbearably trite. horrendous vocals and lyrics. embarrassing.
in the 80s, it seemed the songs were often an excuse just to get to the middle 8 as quick as possible, where the guitarist would go off and show his skills. the rest of the song seemed simply to be a gateway to that technical ostentation.
ultimately this went on wayyyyyy wayyyyyy too long and nirvana washed them all away. and a good thing too, even tho i'm no nirvana fanatic. it had to happen.dead wood made way for new life.
now it's all happening again. modern american heavy music is killing itself with it's own predictability. almost everyone sounds the same. nearly all some kind of grunge,emo/screamo or nickelback derivative. rock music needs another revolution. i hope it comes soon.
