Why Tallahassee said Buck was a puppy?

When Tallahassee mentioned a duct tape wallet they made together with Buck Columbus realized that he was his son. Then why Tallahassee said that Buck was a puppy at first?

I think he wanted to keep his 'macho' persona intact and show Columbus he cared more about a dog than people.

I think it was more of a detachment thing for him. Maybe it was too difficult to think/talk about his son dying.
Not to mention, the characters tried to keep from getting too attached, like using nicknames instead of their real names and the like. I also don't think he wanted to open up that much to just anyone.
