A-list, beautiful women are NEVER attracted to geeks! It doesn't happen and looks very awkward in this film (which otherwise I enjoyed immensely).

In regards to 99% of the time it happens in films, I would agree with you. But in this case, I do not. She only has 3 choices here, the old guy, the nerdy guy, or celibacy. If there was another guy closer to her "type" or if Haymitch was younger, his chances would've been out the window...
Also, though I know it's not your main point, some "hot" chicks are attracted to "nerd" types... The problem is that "nerdy" dudes often lack the balls to step up and talk to the chick...that's why all these films are just fantasies of the nerd writers where the girl approaches the dude.. In real life, you gotta step to the plate.
