I had no idea Hernandez was gay.
Being abused as a young boy and having a father that beat him left a broken person. In no way was this an excuse for his actions but one has to wonder what could have been.

And like you said, this is in no way an excuse for what he did.
I found the 3 hour documentary fascinating, yet somehow feel a falsehood was being sold. I mean, there's been over 23,000 men to play in professional football, so by conservative numbers, at least a thousand were living in the closet and many suffered head traumas, and at least twenty percent of those were raised in abusive environments, yet none that we know were murders.
Point being, his career, fame and money probably contributed to an early incarceration and saved dozens of lives, for had he been a plumber, Hernandez would have operated as a sociopathic killer and murdered for years, if not decades before being caught.
That said, the documentary was focused entirely on finding reason for something where no reason exist.

OJ Simpson, Rae Carruth, Ray Lewis (debatable whether he was the killer, but he and his posse killed two people and tried to cover it up), and Darryl Henley (tried to assassinate judge overseeing his trial on cocaine trafficking) are former players over the last 20 years who come immediately to mind. All were stars in the league who served or are serving time for murder or attempted murder. Well OJ was acquitted, but you get the idea. I'm sure there are lesser players I haven't thought of that could be added to this shortlist.

Actually seeing how stupid and sloppy he was in trying to cover up his tracks in his murder of Lloyd (smashing his phone, as if it would have prevented police from obtaining his cell and GPS records they could just get from his carrier, not cognizant of tape from his own security system showing him carrying around the murder weapon) I don't see someone with the requisite aptitude to successfully elude justice from just one murder, let alone as a serial killer. In his partial defense, he was severely brain damaged.
But it sounds like you missed the greater point. Those that suffer severe head injury from CTE have problems with judgement and impulse control. That doesn't turn everyone with CTE into murderers but the lack of impulse control could certainly contribute to someone with severe CTE like Hernandez killing Lloyd. It'd be significantly harder for someone like Hernandez to resist acting out on his rage than it'd be for you or I. That doesn't excuse murder of course but it does make it more understandable how it happened.
