Just watched the SyFy premiere (spoilers)

Wow, this film was really bad.

Let's ignore the fact that after 14 years of waiting, we get a sequel that takes place between the first and second movie. Let's also ignore the fact that Sgt. Tubbs has significantly gained weight and aged rapidly within possibly minutes right after the Creeper flew out of the prison with Darry at the end of the first movie. I'd also like to mention that Kenny Brandon, part of the infamous Kenny and Darla myth from the first film, is white now, even though the first movie established his corpse as black (seriously though, how the hell can you fuck that up?) Let's also ignore that while the Creeper is supposedly flying off with Darry from the first film, or possibly ripping out his eyes, the Creeper managed to simultaneously kill a tow-truck driver and attack a female police officer for trying to impound his truck. And let's ignore the fact that the dirt, muddy grass and trees surrounding the prison at the end of the first one has NOW miraculously spawned an asphalt parking lot, multiple buildings to around its general vicinity with most of the trees gone. I could have given this movie some leniency if they introduced a semi-decent plot. There was no plot to speak of, whatsoever.

Let's go over the multiple storylines in this movie. You got Sgt. Tubbs and the supposed Ahab archetype, Danny, trying to chase after the Creeper. You got Meg Foster as Gaylen Brandon, Kenny's WHITE mother, digging up the Creeper's hand from 23 years prior in her backyard that can show a person visions of the Creeper's origin and possible death, all because of the visions/hallucinations she has of WHITE Kenny. You got Gaylen's granddaughter and her boring male love interest. You got a major douchebag and his taller semi-douchebag friends riding around on dirt bikes. And then you got a guy who apparently lost his father back in 1978 seeking vengeance with a mounted gun on the back of a pickup truck. None of these stories build or tie into anything. Danny, our over-the-top Donald Pleasance archetype, dies in a drawn out, slow motion fashion. Tubbs just walks away with a couple scratches. The granddaughter is just a damsel in distress and nothing more, saved at the last minute by a random passerby on a semi-truck that gets killed instantly. The granddaughter's love interest winds up riding the bus from Jeepers Creepers 2 to the Championship Game, but doesn't ride back from the game in Jeepers Creepers 2 so he could stay with family (for some reason, the film attempts to make you think he was supposedly one of the victims when he clearly wasn't). The dirt bike douchebags all wind up dead, and added nothing to the story. The guy seeking vengeance for his father winds up killing himself and a team member when the bullets from his gun ricochet off the truck and into themselves. And Gaylen Brandon writes a sign for the Creeper to read, and THAT is what drives him away. A note with a threat that barely holds any merit because we don't know what the Creeper is, and nor what could kill it.

Almost nothing from this movie has any effect on the plot for Jeepers Creepers 2, and it will probably have no effect for a possible Jeepers Creepers 4, considering the only woman who knows what the Creeper is, Gaylen, will wind up dead 23 years later, by the time its 2024. Unless she tells this info to her granddaughter, there will be no consequences from this movie that could carry on to other films. And even if they did, the Granddaughter would serve nothing more than a source of exposition before disappearing or getting killed off in the next movie. And the biggest middle finger of all is to have the female lead from the first film come back in the last 20 to 30 seconds of this dreading, boring piece of shit movie to spike your interest and then...credits.

Really long and dull boring return to the Jeepers Creepers franchise.

So Gina Phillips (Trish) has no actual role in III? Thank you. You just saved me from wasting 2 hours.

reply

It's literally 30 seconds on screen, if that. She provides a voice over, then is in precisely one shot.

Did the creeper always wear a red shirt?

reply

Not in the first film, and not in the second film either. The red shirt was very jarring and noticeable during all of the daytime, afternoon scenes. At night, its kind of not noticeable.

this movie is pure trash what a disappointment.

Pretty sure Salva was tasked with reigniting the series before they'd release the big bucks for a 'proper' sequel. After all, it's a teen horror film and that demographic will have been toddlers when the first two were out. However, I'm not sure a 4th will ever spread its wings and fly based on the quality of this one.

Okay, if that was the case, fine. But wouldn’t setting the film 16 years in the past be more expensive and put a lot of limitations to what they can do, considering the time period they’re trying go for in this one? And why bring back a character portrayed by an actor who has gotten bigger, older and quite frankly, more fragile in over 16 years when only one minute has passed since we last saw him in the first film? The Creeper makes sense, since he’s under makeup. But Sergeant Tubbs inclusion in this story was not needed.

Honestly, if this movie had a budget, the more interesting story was what happened in 1978. We can see what the Creeper has done to this town in the past, see Kenny and Darla as the right skin color, and witness the birth of this group of hunters led by a pissed off sheriff 46 years later for a Part 4 with Taggart. But having the hunting team in 2001 in between the first two movies make it feel kind of pointless, considering they’re never to be heard of again. Only three of them died, and the rest just disappear.

A 1978-set one would've been awesome, I agree.

The invincible demon truck was a nice absurdist touch in a truly horrendous film. The problem with all of these movies is that the demon is too unkillable. There's no balance. If there's no possibility that the humans can triumph then why would I feel a sense of tension or hope when they attack the creature. It always turns out the same, which makes it boring and stupid
