I was so hooked...so involved ... UNTIL

He went to the Liquor store (after looking at the guys phone)

It fell apart for me at that point because it didn't make sense how they knew who he was.

What'chall think?

it was too big of a lucky break to even operate on the MJ guy who tipped off the robbers.... like come on mate chicago is huge

It really was too much of a coincidence but I saw it as just a fun popcorn flick and wasn't overly concerned with super tight story telling.

I don’t think that is a problem. He showed up at the liquor store claiming to be the owner of the restaurant where MJ worked, and that MJ had told him that he could buy a present for his wife there. That was certainly very suspicious – why would MJ tell his boss that he knows of a place that fences stolen goods? So right there the guy knew that something was wrong. Then Bruce Willis asks for a watch of a specific model. It’s not a big stretch to imagine that he could have put two and two together at that point. Besides, it is perfectly plausible that Bruce Willis’ face would have been on the news following his wife’s murder.

At some point Willis' character would have revealed himself had the ruse worked - the plan was to take back his belongings with some level of force. A confrontation was on the cards. He wanted to gain access to the building by using a false reason and that got him a few minutes before a confrontation happened.

Yeah there are a lot of murders in Chicago but a prominent doctor's wife is murdered and daughter left comatose and chances are this is going to get significant press.
